A collection of the articles Flora Thompson wrote for a small magazine, the Catholic fireside, between 1916 and 1928, when she lived in Liphook in Hampshire as the postmaster's wife. Her interest was captured by many things, including a kestrel hunting in the January skies, the return of migrant birds in April, the remedial properites of the elder tree, and the solitary life of the ploughman. Flora Thompson is perhaps best-known as the author of the country classic, Lark rise to Candleford, and her remarkable observations about the countryside form a valuable part of the history of rural England.

This collects two sets of lectures Ms. Gardner gave in her career. The first series, "The Profession of a Critic," was given at the University of London in 1953. The second series, "The Limits of Literary Criticism," was given at King's College, Newcastle, in 1956, the Riddell Memorial Lectures for that year. Ms. Gardner provides a helpful view on literary criticism in the middle of the 20th century, and presents perspectives and insights beneficial to one's understanding of the ideas that were current before Deconstruction came along. Her first essay/lecture is especially helpful, reminding us that the critic should not wield a scepter (as in the scepter of monolithic interpretive "truth") but instead should carry a lamp, lighting the path for enjoyment and understanding of literature.

In the long river of human history, if one person can represent the civilization of a whole nation, it is perhaps Master Kong, better known as Confucius in the West. If there is one single book that can be upheld as the common code of a whole people, it is perhaps Lun Yu, or The Analects. Surely, few individuals in history have shaped their country's civilization more profoundly than Master Kong. A legend in his lifetime, Lord Byron was the dominant influence on the Romantic movement. The text of this edition, which contains nearly all of Byron's published poems together with the poet's own Notes, was first published in The Oxford Poets in 1896, and has been reprinted numerous times. Fredrick Page's text has been revised by John Jump, who has made a number of substantive corrections, and added to Don Juan the fragment of a seventeenth canto that was previously unavailable.

This is a truly extraordinary introduction to the philosophy of science by a real practitioner. Even though some 'professional' philosophers of science may object to Medawar's use of Popper's theories (about which they have already a settled, and mostly negative, opinion), the fact that the author really knows, and knows from the inside, how science works offsets any weak points in the book - and there are very few such points.
