Welches Verhältnis entwickeln wir zu Orten, die unsere Identität in der Kindheit oder im gegenwärtigen Leben prägen? Autorinnen und Autoren aus Nordrhein-Westfalen haben sehr unterschiedliche Antworten zu "ihren" Orten gefunden: erinnernd, fiktional, beschreibend, augenzwinkernd. Nordrhein-Westfalen ist kein homogenes und im eigentlichen Sinne identitätsstiftendes Land. Es setzt sich zusammen aus vielen Regionen, die in ihrer Eigenart zur Identifikation, aber auch zur kritischen Abgrenzung einladen. In 29 Texten spielt dieses NRW als Herkunftsregion, als Zukunftsort oder als Ort einschlägiger Erfahrung eine Rolle. Ob Rainer Merkel im Stadtwald seine Runden dreht oder die Leser mit Frank Goosen das schöne Mädchen vom Wertstoffhof treffen, ob für Liane Dirks die Kölner Domplatte zum Erinnerungsort wird oder Esther Kinsky anhand einer Kiesgrube in Römlinghoven von der frühen Bundesrepublik erzählt literarisch leuchtet das Land im Westen auf besondere Weise. Die Kunststiftung NRW nimmt ihr 25. Gründungsjubiläum zum Anlass, zeitgenössische literarische Stimmen aus Nordrhein-Westfalen in einer Anthologie zu Wort kommen zu lassen. Eine literarische Landkarte entsteht.

What happens when the world fuses into a global village, when cultures mix, traditions dissolve, and something new arises? In search of cultural identity and cultural bastardizing, the authors let themselves in for an extreme expedition: visting the hot spots of globalization in just 21 days, flying to Mexico City, L.A., Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai and back to Frankfurt. Hundreds of meetings with artists, musicians, designers and authors were on their itinerary. Bastard is about the personal interpretation of these manifold impressions. The fact that globalization does not only have a negative impact is just one aspect. Often it seems as though we are entering an exciting new era in which an enriching exchange of media, styles and thoughts is more important than ever. Photography, illustration, graphic design and typography have merged into a tightly woven work expressing culture, everyday life, movement, tradition and national and personal identity.A line-up of famous authors have contributed tales and interpretations of cultural bastardizing to the project.
