Founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914 as a philanthropic and fraternal ogranization to promote pan-Africanism, the UNIA developed into a radical political group that advocated repatriation to Africa, among other things. The major portion of this collection dates from the period 1940-1950.

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, printed material, lectures, notebooks, and miscellanea concerning family members and the scientific papers of James Dwight and Edward Salisbury Dana in the fields of geology, mineralogy, and natural science. The papers are arranged in four series with each series containing the papers of an individual family member: Series 1. James Dwight Dana (1813-1895); Series 2. Edward Salisbury Dana (1849-1935); Series 3. James Dana (1780-1860); and Series 4. Maria Trumbull Dana (1867-1961.

John L. Lewis, leader of the United Mine Workers of America, along with three other mine officials, was investigated on charges of violating Section 51 of Title 18 of the United States Code. Between 1937-1941 they were accused of conspiring to oppress employees from Mine "B" in Springfield, IL, from exercising their rights secured to them by the National Labor Relations Act. After a full investigation by the FBI, the Dept. of Justice decided not to prosecute the case and it was closed in 1943.
