Things I have learned

There is plenty of homely philosophy and sound common sense in these chapel addresses, combined with a deep spirituality which makes its impression on every Christian heart. Here is a volume of "folksy" talks which the author has delivered on many occasions, that are spun out of the "old-time" religion and are full of homely advice and sharp reminders that the Christian life is a matter of working hard as well as praying hard. Thousands outside of the college walls will appreciate the reservoir of simple truths which streamed from the author's personal experiences, while motivated by a deep personal interest in his students' spiritual welfare. The author is the Founder and President of the college which bears his name -- a college which, standing without apology for the old faith and for the absolute authority of the Bible, has been going forward with rapid strides. During the last two years it points with pride to a record increase in enrollment of 50%. - Jacket flap. The 20 messages in this volume are a few of the many chapel talks which I have given to our own Bob Jones College students. We have made no effort to edit these messages. They were mechanically recorded (some of them without my knowing at the time that they were being recorded) and are being released in the exact form in which they were given. The friends who read the addresses will notice that we often mention Bob Jones College, but they will, of course, understand that we were talking to our own students and were endeavoring to drill into them not only the principles under discussion but also the spirit of the institution of which the author is the founder. Having had a wide experience over a period of many years and dealing with thousands of people in the various walks of life, I am fully convinced that even the average Christian can be "a success" in the field of service to which he is divinely called if he will "live up to" the practical philosophy which is emphasized in these addresses. - Bob Jones - Preface.

Comments on Here and Hereafter

"Of making many books there is no end," so spoke the man in the book of Ecclesiastes. This book, "Comments on Here and Hereafter," however, is not just another of the many that often cause "weariness of the flesh." It is alive, for it is the distinct fingerprint of a Christian's soul. The paragraphs of which it consists have been taken, whole or in part, from the columns of "The Fellowship News," of which the author is editor, and from his syndicate articles released to the secular press. These paragraphs have had necessarily to be dictated rapidly to a stenographer between the strain and stress of evangelistic meetings, the classes of practical instruction to students, and many other duties. Not one paragraph was ever given to fill space, but with the sole desire of instructing, warning, and inspiring its readers to keep in mind that they had but one earthly life and therefore should live it worthily with eyes fixed on an eternal goal. From boyhood the author's compelling aim has been to glorify God as the Redeemer of mankind; therefore, a number of personal paragraphs have been selected because of their human touch. As an evangelist for over 40 years, the founder of Bob Jones College, the Young People's Fellowship Club, and the Gospel Fellowship Association, Dr. Jones needs no introduction to the people of this country or other countries, as he is greatly beloved by multitudes whose feet he has guided from the darkness and shadow of eternal death into the way of everlasting peace. As managing editor of "The Fellowship News," it has been my joyous privilege to arrange the contents of this book. May it bear healing on its wings to the immortal souls of its saved readers, and may it be read by unsaved sinners and cause them to seek unto the living God. - Introduction - Grace W. Haight. This is not a book of sermons but a collection of comments or thoughts. This book consists of paragraphs taken from the columns of The Fellowship News, of which the author was editor, and from his syndicated articles released to the secular press. It is filled with examples from Dr. Jones' own experience. It is a collection of comments or thoughts, as many as 20 or 30 each, on subjects like Christian living, God, worship, Satan, the Bible, and heaven.

Bob Jones' Revival Sermons

These sermons were preached in a city-wide revival campaign sponsored by some two hundred Chicago area churches and Christian organizations in the Chicago Arena April 28 to June 2, 1946. Attendance reached approximately six thousand. The picture on the jacket and on the end sheets shows one of the audiences who heard Dr. Jones in this campaign. Since Dr. Jones preached the first two weeks of a five-week campaign (followed by Dr. Paul Rood and Dr. John R. Rice), these messages were laying the ground work for the campaign, reviving the saints, arousing interest, bringing conviction, and preparing the way for a blessed ingathering. Many were turned to God under the power of these messages. Although Dr. Jones was an evangelistic contemporary of R. A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, Gipsy Smith, and William Biederwolf, he is still going strong, seeing thousands saved yearly in great revival campaigns. To the vigor of his thought and the power of his preaching, the reader will testify. Dr. John R. Rice said in the introduction: "I am somewhat familiar with the printed sermons of great preachers. I heard Dr. George W. Truett many times during his prime. I have heard Scarborough, Philpott, Gipsy Smith, Sunday and Rader. He has something of the earnestness of Truett, the story-telling charm of Rader, the sweet simplicity of Gipsy Smith, the courageous convictions of Billy Sunday. I thank God that we can now have in print some of the old-time revival sermons by Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. Uncounted thousands have been moved by them, changed by them, blessed by them. May they burn anew in the heart of every reader!" - Jacket flap.

C. S. Lewis is a beloved writer and thinker and arguably the most important Christian intellectual of the twentieth century. His groundbreaking children's series The Chronicles of Narnia, lucid nonfiction titles such as Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain, and thought-provoking fiction, including The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce, have become trusted companions for millions of readers. Here Lewis breathes new life into words and concepts that have dulled through time and familiarity, and his writings inevitably provoke deep thought and surprising revelations.Words to Live By contains an unprecedented selection of Lewis's writings, drawing from his most popular works, but also from his volumes of letters and his lesser-known essays and poems. His works are presented in accessible selections covering subjects from A to Z, including beauty, character, confession, doubt, family, holiness, and religion. Both a wonderful introduction to Lewis's thinking and a wise and insightful guide to key topics in the Christian life, these are truly words to live by.
