As a result of the opposition to his method of teaching, he published this work. Dalton was the first American to devote his time exclusively to the subject of physiology. He was present at the first demonstration of ether as an anesthetic in Oct 1846 and was able to see its possibilities as a means of illustrating his lectures with experiments on living animals.
