Babies
Describes how babies look and act and how they change as they grow. Kids get a great introduction to human growth and development as they observe a baby's antics through the eyes of an older sister. Young readers discover that a newborn sees only in black and white and can taste sweet, bitter, and sour, but naturally prefers sweet. They see how a baby likes to imitate and can even learn from playing peek-a-boo. And readers also find out just when a baby will be ready to do other things. A child's book of poems
William Blake, Kate Greenaway, Emily Dickinson: the writers in this charming anthology of 200 poems—first published in 1969—are among literature's most beloved. And Gyo Fujikawa's appealing illustrations depict children of all races sweetly interacting, as well as an engagingly rendered menagerie of animals and the natural world in all its wonderment. Among the verses that children will love are Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Christmas Bells," Lewis Carroll's "The Melancholy Pig," and Eugene Fields' "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," along with proverbs, limericks, nursery rhymes, and folk songs.

Make believe
In Make Believe, Diana Athill, acclaimed author of Instead of a Letter and Stet, remembers her turbulent friendship with Hakim Jamal, a young black convert to the teachings of Malcolm X, whom she met in London in the late 1960s. Despite a desperately troubled youth, he became an eloquent spokesman for the black underclass, was Jean Seberg's lover and published a book about Malcolm X, before descending into a mania that had him believing he was God. A witness to his struggles, Diana Athill writes with her characteristic honesty about her entanglement with Jamal, Jamal's relationship with the daughter of a British MP, Gail Benson, and Jamal's, and separately Gail's, eventual murders.
