Myth and mystery
The question this book tries to answer is one of language. How can we speak of God to the men of our day? Between the God who seeks man, and the man who seeks God, the path must be found. Our speech about God must reach the heart of man, his inner experience. In particular, it must reach the heart of the man of our day. This book is the expression of that attempt.
Linguistics, language and religion
The relatively new science of linguistics, which is concerned with the development and changes in speech and language, studies such problems as definition, ambiguity, vernaculars, liturgical usage and Biblical translations. The author here provides a useful and fascinating introduction to this new science. He shows how linguistics provides new insights and facts concerning the religious heritage of mankind. The major part of the book is concerned with the specifically religious implications that arise from a knowledge of linguistics. Here questions of interpretation, Biblical exegesis and translation are all studied in depth.
The God of reason
Does God exist? And, if he exists, what is his nature? At the root of all man's restlessness and all his philosophical speculation there is only one problem, namely, the problem of God. This is surely the question of questions, to which all others lead and from which it is impossible to escape. Man's whole life is determined by this question. The meaning we find in human existence must depend entirely upon the solution we give to the problem of th existence and nature of God. Philosophers have always debated the proofs or lack of proofs for the existence of God and the grounds for right conduct, with or without supernatural sanctions. The author has set forth in the pages of this volume a history of these debates from pre-Christian times to the modern period, together with a consideration of the Christian standpoint as it appears today.
