Edward's proposal was shocking: he would marry Hester and provide for her if she would care for his troubled son. Despite her misgivings, Hester agreed -- for something in Edward's dark, anguished eyes touched her soul. But upon her arrival in Cornwall, Hester feared she had made a terrible mistake.
