Washington Irving

American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He was best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle", both of which appear in his book "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent" (Wikipedia).

Description

Escaping from his nagging wife, Rip Van Winkle heads for the woods of the Kaatskill Mountains. There he meets a dwarf and when Rip drinks from the odd man’s keg he soon falls into a deep slumber. When he awakens the sun in shining brightly and he discovers he has grown a gray, foot-long beard. He has been asleep for twenty years!
