Bishop (1847-1929) was a native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale. He studied architecture after finishing college and then was the editor and proprietor of the Milwaukee Commercial Times for nine years. He afterward was an instructor at Yale and then served as the U.S. Consul in Genoa and Palermo. He published many books and contributed articles to leading magazines. The Golden Justice is set in Milwaukee.
