Description

From Open Road Media publishers: Born in New York City, Robert Newman (1909–1988) was among the pioneers of early radio and was chief writer for the Inner Sanctum Mysteries and Murder at Midnight — forerunners of The Twilight Zone that remain cult favorites to this day. In 1944 Newman was put in charge of the radio campaign to reelect Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was also one of the founding members of the Radio Writers Guild, which became the Writers Guild of America. In 1973 Newman began writing books for children, most notably the Andrew Tillett, Sara Wiggins & Inspector Wyatt mysteries. The series takes place in Victorian London and follows the adventures of two teenage amateur detectives who begin as Baker Street Irregulars. Newman has also written books of fantasy, among them Merlin’s Mistake and The Testing of Tertius, and books based on myths and folklore including Grettir the Strong. He also published two adult novels. Newman was married to the writer Dorothy Crayder. Their daughter, Hila Feil, has also published novels for children and young adults. Newman lived his last days in Stonington, Connecticut.

Andrew Tillett, Sara Wiggins & Inspector Wyatt Book Three Young Andrew Tillett liked retired Sergeant Major Polk when their mutual friend, Inspector Peter Wyatt of Scotland Yard, introduced them. The three went into a pub to talk after an unexpected meeting on the street: but there, though Polk and Wyatt had known each other for years, Polk seemed nervous, and interrupted their conversation to speak with a heavy-set scar-faced man. The two almost came to blows, yet Polk refused to reveal much of what the encounter meant. A few days later Polk was dead. He had been working for Lord Somerville, at a villa not far from Andrew's home, and had been murdered, Lord Somerville said, as he was getting the household coach ready for a journey. Robbery seemed to be the motive, because a chest of valuable archeological treasures had been stolen. Lord Somerville had conducted a number of digs in Mesopotamia. Because Andrew had liked Polk, and because he and his friend Sara were always intrigued by a mystery, they made it their business to find out as much about what was going on as possible. Especially after Wyatt was assigned to the case. What did the scar-faced man have to do with the murder? Were a mysterious chimney sweep and his French apprentice involved in any way? And were Somerville and his housekeeper, who were the only ones about at the time of the crime, telling all they knew? Or was Lord Somerville keeping a secret that was somehow a part of this? Once again, as in The Case of the Baker Street Irregular and The Case of the Vanishing Corpse, Robert Newman spins a web of story that builds mystery on mystery and suspense on suspense.

Andrew Tillett, Sara Wiggins & Inspector Wyatt Book 8 From Open Road Media: Turning up missing is better than turning up dead Inspector Peter Wyatt is out of town. This is inconvenient, because something is terribly wrong with Andrew Tillett and Sara Wiggins’s friend, antiquities dealer Baron Beasley — and he refuses to see a doctor or speak to anyone except Wyatt. A large man with usually-rosy cheeks and a fondness for exotic delicacies, Beasley now looks like a shadow of himself and can’t be coaxed out of bed. To Sara and Andrew, Beasley doesn’t look sick as much as deathly frightened — which is even more worrisome. What could possibly have driven the robust man into this state? Is it connected to a strange artifact he recently acquired that seems to have disappeared from his shop? Only Beasley knows, and he’s not telling — in fact, he’s disappeared from his room. Andrew and Sara race to find him, throwing themselves into their most dangerous case yet.

Andrew Tillett, Sara Wiggins & Inspector Wyatt Book 4 Andrew Tillett's friend, Sara Wiggins, was missing. She had simply failed to return from dancing school. Of course, Andrew and his mother immediately notified their old friend Inspector Wyatt of Scotland Yard, and he and his men, as well as Andrew, began trying to solve the mystery. Something strange was afoot certainly. And when Sara's friend, Maria, the daughter the First Secretary of the Serbian embassy, also disappeared, the situation grew more tense. The young king of Serbia was about to visit England, and it was known that there were those who would like to kill the king. The search for Sara and her friend Maria took Andrew and Inspector Wyatt in to many parts of London, but especially down into the London sewers. It was there, guided by an old tosher (someone who searched the sewers for objects to sell) that the essence of the plot against the king was revealed. But that did not find Sara or Maria. Where were they, and why were they being held? Fortunately for all, the plotters had not counted on dealing with a girl as ingenious as Sara or a young man as perceptive as Andrew. Peter Wyatt might be good at preventing an international crisis, but Sara and Andrew knew how to help each other in London.
