Mas que un rio, el Rin ha sido siempre una apuesta: politica, economica y cultural. Este es el objetivo del ensayo historico de Lucien Febvre, que publicamos nuevamente, despues de su primera edicion de 1935. Escrito durante la ocupacion francesa de Renania, teniendo como telon de fondo la escalada del nazismo, va resueltamente en contra de las interpretaciones dominantes a la sazon: el mito del “Rin aleman”, asi como el de “frontera natural”. Frente a los faciles lemas, sobre todo del mito barresiano de un “genio del Rin” que habria que anexar a Francia, Febvre defiende la idea, hoy casi trivial pero iconoclasta entonces, de un Rin que sirve de enlace: rio europeo que vincula pueblos y culturas.
