Durant ces trente dernières années, l'Amérique latine a changé. Sa population a doublé. La richesse a augmenté mais elle s'est concentrée en quelques mains. L'Église a changé. Il y a 30 ans, on ne parlait que de "sécularisation". Aujourd'hui, le "spirituel" prédomine. Or l'Église est au service du monde et ne peut pas vivre en dehors du monde. José Comblin plaide alors pour la libération de la théologie, décape l'évangile, dénonce les mirages du néolibéralisme et encourage l'État à reprendre la barre. Il scrute les nouveaux chemins de libération sociale, économique, politique, culturelle, personnelle, pour un siècle qui débute.
