An overnight success, The Man of Feeling is a tear-jerking novel about a hero struggling to remain virtuous in spite of the exploitive world around him. This sentimental story was beloved by many, including Burns who promoted it as “a book I prize next to the Bible.” Published in 1771, it became the inspiration for Mackenzie’s future works, The Man of the World and Julia de Rubigne.
