The practice of teaching in the secondary school
This book is principally concerned with mastery--mastery of material by students, and the mastery of organizing, presenting, and assessing how this material is retained by students on the part of teachers. Topics addressed include establishing the objectives of teaching, the development of a learning situation, and the "teaching cycle," that is, exploration, presentation, assimilation, organization, and recitation. Particular attention is paid to unique methods of measuring the extent of group control by the teacher and of sustained application on the part of the individual pupil. The different types of subject matter, and specific variations of teaching them are addressed. Throughout, the emphasis is on quality of instruction (by the teacher) and both allocated and engaged instructional time (or, attention paid by students), which came to be known as the mastery system of teaching and learning.
