Giorgio Morandi

The exhibition at Artipelag highlights about fifty works from Morandi's career. The very earliest works are from 1921 and the latest from 1963. A significant portion of the Morandi paintings featured in the exhibition are still life of ceramic household items and there are also a handful of landscape paintings included. The paintings are complemented by drawings, etchings and watercolours, which illustrate Morandi's artistic range. De Waal's characteristic series of porcelain pots shifts the attention from each pot to their grouping as a whole, the created spaces between them and how the viewer's gaze flows through the art work. Artipelag's exhibition will be the first time that de Waal's works are presented in Sweden and will include close to forty art works from 2012 to 2017. About ten of these works are new, stemming from a dialogue with the works of Morandi; de Waal has on numerous occasions emphasized Morandi as one of his greatest sources of inspiration. De Italiaanse kunstenaar Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) is de grootmeester van de twintigste eeuwse stillevenkunst. Met zijn subtiel geschilderde vazen, potjes en flessen groeide hij - ondanks die schijnbaar eenvoudige thematiek - uit tot een ikoon. De tijdloosheid en verstilling in Morandi's schilderijen, spreken ook veel collega-kunstenaars aan. Niet voor niets wordt hij een painter's painter genoemd, een inspiratiebron voor andere schilders. Morandi leefde een teruggetrokken bestaan in zijn geboorteplaats Bologna. Hij verliet de stad zelden en was voornamelijk in de beslotenheid van zijn sobere atelier te vinden. Daar vond hij ook zijn 'modellen', de kruikjes en potten die vereeuwigd werden in steeds wisselende samenstellingen. In dit boek wordt een ruime selectie van zijn stillevens getoond: schilderijen, tekeningen en enkele grafische werken. Ingeleid door Alessia Masi, directeur van het Museo Morandi in Bologna. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor de stad Bologna. Kunstenares Ada Duker fotografeerde architectuurfragmenten en auteur Jan Brokken schreef over zijn ervaringen met Bologna en het werk van Morandi. Dat zorgt voor een verrassende en vernieuwende kennismaking met het werk van deze unieke Italiaanse kunstenaar.
