Description

Garet Rogers was the pen name of Margaret Rogers Miller (1920 - 1996). The nom de plume she used as a novelist was created out of the last 5 letters of her first name plus her maiden name. Originally from Ohio, she was a lady lawyer who lived in Hollywood, and was (allegedly) the first woman to ever run for mayor in the state of California (Los Angeles, 1960). In the 1950s and 1960s she published a number of novels, "Prisoner in paradise" (her first, in 1954), "The Jumping off place","Brother surgeons" (aka "The lancet"), "A corner in angels.", "Oath of dishonor", and "Scandal in Eden."

"A young man of doubtful parentage struggles to become a physician but is railroaded to prison for a murder he did not commit. When he is released in 1941, he has become a cynic, and founds in Los Angeles the popular 'Healthopathy Clinic,' where a gathering of medical quacks and cultists minister to a host of neurotic patients, many from the Hollywood colony."--Baird & Greenwood.

When the Hunter brothers came to eighteenth century London, surgery was scorned by physicians. Flesh was butchered by ignorant hacks and bleeding was the cure for all ills. Cleanliness was almost unknown, and in that whore infested city veneral disease was rife. In this great novel, Garet Rogers tells of William and John Hunter, who revolutionised the science of healing, battling dirt, ignorance and disease with the cold steel of surgery.

This historical novel details the lives of brothers John and William Hunter, whose pioneering work in anatomy broke through centuries of ignorance and error. The brothers' rivalry and their work takes place in 18th century London, a complex, earthy world. Procuring cadavers for study meant delving in the criminal underworld, and sometimes in graveyards. If you have a strong stomach, you will learn about cultural history, anatomy and medicine, and the lessons are delivered through wonderful characters in this fast-paced novel. It's one of my favorites.
