Books
Proptosis Otolaryngologist's Perspective
This e book discusses otolaryngological causes of proptosis and its management
Vidian Neurectomy
This e book discusses the role of vidian neurectomy in the management of vasomotor rhinitis. Even though controversial in the current concept, the surgical skill acquired in performing this procedure will help the surgeon in performing other complex endoscopic skull base surgeries.
Maxillectomy a review
This E book discusses in detail total maxillectomy. This book discusses the surgical steps involved in the procedure with photographs.
Voice rehabilitation following total laryngectomy
This e book describes various voice rehabilitation procedures available to a patient who has undergone total laryngectomy.
Malignant tumors of larynx
1. List item This e book discusses malignant tumors of larynx and its management
Hearing aids
This book fills up an important gap that existed in the post graduate learning resource. Otolaryngologist had a poor insight as far as this topic is concerned. The author feels that all practicing otolaryngologist should have a basic understanding of hearing aid, how it functions, and how to prescribe them. More than anything else they should also be aware about the limitations of the hearing aid. This book should enlighten the students of otolaryngology on this vital topic. This topic is a little bit boring because of the physics involved. The author wishes to allay the fears of the student that prior knowledge of acoustic and electro-physics is not needed. All the basic stuff have been explained on a need to know basis with clear illustrations. Standard text books in otolaryngology don’t cover this topic with clarity leaving the otolaryngologist to fend for themselves when it comes to hearing aids. The author feels a practicing otologist should have a clear understanding of the concept of hearing aids and the development that have been taking place in this field. Clear idea of this topic will ensure that the otologist to whom the patient first lands up give proper guidance to the patient. Otologist should also be in a position to offer alternate non invasive options of improving the patient’s hearing. The author is of the opinion that proper motivation of the patient to use hearing aids will help them to avoid risky surgical procedures to improve hearing in otosclerosis. As far as sensorineural hearing loss hearing aid happens to be the only viable solution that is available to the patient. The author also wishes to stress on the importance of using bilateral hearing aids in patients with bilateral hearing loss (be it conductive or sensorineural hearing loss). This book attempts to impart vital knowledge on this topic using below upwards concept, making it easy for a novice to understand the topic. The author hopes that this book will be useful to the students of otolaryngology as well as the practitioners of otolaryngology
Faciomaxillary Trauma An Update
This book discusses the current management trends of faciomaxillary fractures. This is a supplement of otolaryngology online journal.
EPRINTS BELOW UPWARDS (THE MANUAL THAT WAS MISSED)
This e book describes installation of eprints repository software step by step. Eprints software is actually a web based command line application based on LAMP 4 architecture. The configuration files of EPRINTS are written in Perl / XML and hence can successfully run under multiple operating systems like Linux, Windows, Mac, and Solaris. It is hence easy to edit the configuration files according to one's requirement. Major problem which the author noticed with Eprints is that its literature is not adequate for a novice to install and maintain a repository. For any software to become popular it should be easy to install and operate. Eprints actually an enigma, because of inadequate literature and forum support. This has prompted the author to write this manuscript with an intention of taking this unique software to the doorsteps of even novice users.
Basic Input Output System BIOS
BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is a very important tool that helps in initializing the computer. Whatever the form factor, every computer should have a BIOS for it to work. Initially BIOS was considered as a very simple basic code with very few settings to manipulate. Currently the sheer number of peripherals that are attached to a computer is mind boggling. BIOS has undergone lots of changes in order to make these peripherals work. Author has managed to simplify the various settings which are available under the hood of BIOS. All the various settings are discussed in detail with the help of screen shots. Two common BIOS manufacturer’s settings (Gigabyte and Acer) are discussed. Other manufacturer’s BIOS settings are more or less the same with minor modifications. Reading this book will help the reader to configure any BIOS settings out there. This book has been authored by a Non computer science professional who spent lots of his time tinkering and tweaking various BIOS settings. The result of the experience is this book. Entering the BIOS setup utility allows the user to change the boot process order as well as a wide variety of hardware settings. One caution is that it is not recommended for an inexperienced user to change settings in the BIOS. BIOS limitations which were inherent led to the creation of a new firmware interface called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. This interface can boot from disks over 2-TB in size, has a graphical user interface with network capability, and is also backward and forward compatible. Currently UEFI is slowly replacing conventional BIOS. This book extensively discusses UEFI BIOS settings. Updating BIOS has become simple and safe with the inherent update tool. Users can now safely update their BIOS without the fear of damaging CMOS chips. Exact steps of the BIOS update process could vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but they have been simplified and made fail safe. This book has been tailored for intermediate users with basic knowledge of computers who are capable of installing operating systems. Initially BIOS was purely text based with no GUI. Users needed to use the keyboard extensively to manipulate the settings. Current BIOS chips have GUI interfaces with mouse enabled. This made life of the user simple as settings can be manipulated by the click of a mouse button.
