Anthony Julian Huxley

윤희구(尹喜求, 1867-1926)의 시초詩抄와 문초文抄이다. 본관은 해평이고 자는 주현周玄이며 참의 홍선宖善의 아들이다. 1897년(광무 1) 사례소史禮所가 설치되어 박학사博學士로 선발되어 장지연張志淵과 함께 『대한예전大韓禮典』의 편찬에 참여했고, 『증보문헌비고』ㆍ『양조보감兩朝寶鑑』을 편찬하기도 했다. 또 1916년에는 장지연ㆍ오세창吳世昌과 『대동시선大東詩選』을 교열하기도 했다. 시초에는 시 363편가 실려 있고, 문초에는 권상 논論 8편ㆍ전傳 3편ㆍ행장 5편ㆍ서사書事 1편ㆍ사장事狀 1편ㆍ묘지명 1편ㆍ지志 1편ㆍ묘단비墓壇碑 5편ㆍ신도비명 2편ㆍ묘갈명 15편ㆍ묘표 1편ㆍ비명碑銘 5편ㆍ유허비遺墟碑 1편ㆍ명銘 5편ㆍ찬贊 2편ㆍ송頌 1편ㆍ설說 7편ㆍ축사 2편ㆍ소疏 1편ㆍ서書 5편ㆍ제문 5편, 권하 서序 48편ㆍ기記 35편ㆍ발跋 6편ㆍ제題 2편ㆍ상량문 1편ㆍ잡문雜文 2편 등이 실려 있다. 시는 ｢교거잡감僑居雜感｣ㆍ｢소설야음小雪夜吟｣ 등 일상생활을 자연스럽게 읊은 것과 ｢동경잡영東京雜詠｣ 등 고적ㆍ명승을 읊은 것도 있는데, 현실이 배제된 관념적이고 낭만적인 차원에서 머문 채 정적이고 애상적인 서정의 세계로 일관하고 있다는 평이 있다. 문초중 ｢아유론我儒論｣ㆍ｢흥학론興學論｣ㆍ｢양사론養士論｣ ㆍ｢과거론科擧論｣ 등 논論은 학문적인 내용들로 이루어져 있다. 1928년 민형식閔衡植의 발문이 있다. 문초의 권하가 결본이다.

The fictional story of an English family's time in California, post-war. This is the 1949 edition and contains references to rationing and some references to race which are no longer used. Later editions redacted aspects such as these. The story is about the children's ambitions and emerging careers in the Arts, and some of the characters from Noel Streatfeild's most famous book, Ballet Shoes, appear as adults. I enjoyed it both for the story and as a social history source: I understand the author drew heavily on her own experiences visiting the States and the contrast between the deprivations of post-war London and the vibrancy of California is brought out beautifully.
