By day, the kind-but-crippled Bishop tends to the poor and destitute; by night, he sheds his clerical garb and his physical disability to become a notorious Limehouse criminal, the Blackbird.

Unemployed Polly Parrish impulsively picks up a baby left at orphanage doors at Christmas. Everyone assumes the foundling is hers, including Polly's playboy ex-boss, who offers her a job if she'll live up to her maternal duties. A paycheck would be handy, so Polly complies. Then the boss's tycoon dad assumes the infant is his secret grandson, and things really spin out of control.

When his dying wife returns with a baby girl a year after leaving him for Crane, a Limehouse magician named Phroso vows to get even. Placing the baby in a Zanzibar brothel, Phroso spends the next 18 years living with cannibals while he waits for the child to come of age. Summoning the debauched young woman to his jungle lair, Phroso plans to reunite the girl with her long-lost father, after which he'll order the natives to kill the trader and burn Crane's daughter alive!

Filmed amid the actual bombed out ruins of Frankfurt and Berlin after World War II, this film recounts the dangerous attempts to unify Germany as four post-war heroes from Britain, France, Russia and the U.S. battle die-hard Nazis to rescue an anti-fascist German statesman.
