When Carole Hanson and her father travel to Minnesota to visit relatives, Carole has the perfect assignment to create a family tee. Ever since her mother died, Carole has been curious about that side of the family, especially about an ancestor who journeyed north along the Underground Railroad. Then Carole discovers a secret lurking in her family tree, and she begins to question where she's come from. Do bloodlines matter as much with people as they do with horses? Carole discovers the answer when a dangerous horseback ride threatens the life on one of her relatives.

A sick, abused horse has been rescued and brought to Pine Hollow Stables. The vet is doing everything she can to save its life, but the horse's spirit is broken too. The girls in The Saddle Club are determined to save the animal from a sad, lonely end. But, how?

The girls of the Saddle Club--Stevie Lake, Carole Hanson, and Lisa Atwood--and their friend Emily have headed West to the Bar None Dude Ranch. Emily has cerebral palsy. She's helping the ranch's owner make it accessible to riders with special needs. At the ranch, they meet a girl their own age--a former rider who has lost part of her leg in a motorbike accident. She doesn't plan to get on a horse ever again. In the meantime, the Saddle Club and Emily are riding so much, they're saddle sore! Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?

When Carole rides a new mare at the Bar None Ranch, she discovers that although the mare is well-trained, she still has something wild in her. When the mare disappear, the Saddle Club must find her, and when they do, they must decide whether to give her the freedom she wants or find a way to make her give up the wild life.

The Saddle Club's friend from England, Lady Theresa, otherwise known as Tessa, is coming for a visit, which Veronica views as a chance for revenge against Tessa for snubbing Veronica when the Saddle Club was in England.

Lisa Atwood is helping to train a new horse at Pine Hollow, one she thinks her parents are planning to buy for her. But when the horse turns out to be difficult, even dangerous, Lisa worries that telling her parents she doesn't want them to buy it will mean she'll never get a horse of her own.

Stevie Lake entered a contest to win a down comforter. Instead she got a new “family”–a nestful of goose eggs. But when the eggs hatch, it’s love at first sight for Stevie and the goslings. Now Stevie’s learning that being a mom is hard work: the goslings want to go everywhere Stevie goes, even to Pine Hollow. Stevie has to keep her “kids” safe while trying to learn a new skill–vaulting. The Saddle Club is determined to master vaulting and show Veronica diAngelo that success takes more than fancy coaches. Lisa’s horrid, bratty cousin is staying with the Atwoods. The nine-year-old nightmare child acts charming around adults, but to other kids, she’s a menace. Stevie Lake thinks she knows everything there is to know about getting along in New York City -- until she meets Regina Evans. Regina is the daughter of a New York friend of Stevie's mom. When Stevie and her mother visit the city, Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Evans catch up on old times -- while Regina introduces Stevie to her friends and their favorite hangouts. It's a lot of fun until an accident leaves Regina and Stevie in real danger. But just when things look worst, Stevie gets a chance to prove that a horse can always save the day -- even in New York City

Carole Hanson writes a letter to the daughter of a Middle Eastern President inviting her to come riding at Pine Hollow. She hopes she might get a reply with an interesting stamp, instead she gets security guards roaming the grounds looking for spies. When a real spy shows up, it's the Saddle Club who rides to the rescue.
