Young Gervaise Tresham leaves England and the turmoil of the Wars of the Roses to become a Knight of St. John. Starting as a page of the Grand Master, Gervaise quickly attains knighthood and defends Europe and Christendom against the anarchy of piracy in the Mediterranean and the expansion of the Turkish empire. Sir Tresham is there to defend the fortress at Rhodes during the first siege of that city by Soleiman.

Beric, a boy-chief of a British tribe, plays a prominent part in the insurrection under Queen Boadicea against the invading Roman legionnaires. He is ultimately captured and taken to Rome, where he is trained as a gladiator. After saving a Christian maid by slaying a lion in the arena, he is rewarded by being made librarian of the palace as well as the personal protector of Nero. Finally, he escapes, organizes a band of outlaws in Calabria, defies the power of Rome, and at length returns to Britain, where he becomes a wise ruler of his own people.

Historical novel set in England in the middle of the seventeenth century. The Preface begins: ""As many boys into whose hands the present volume may fall will not have read my last year's book, With Moore in Corunna, of which this is a continuation, it is necessary that a few words should be said, to enable them to take up the thread of the story. It was impossible, in the limits of one book, to give even an outline of the story of the Peninsular War, without devoting the whole space to the military operations. It would, in fact, have been a history rather than a tale; and it accordingly closed with the passage of the Douro, and the expulsion of the French from Portugal."
