Which should she choose? Tod, kind, reliable, rich, who could do so much for her mother and sisters — or Paul, poor, proud, free and dangerously attractive? And had she the choice, indeed? Did Paul even care for her? These were the problems forever at the back of Stella’s mind as she sat at her easel in a little mountain village, trying to capture on canvas the golden light of a perfect Italian summer.
