Description

The author Robert Casey was a longtime newspaperman in Chicago from 1920 until the 1950s. This is his memoir of his early years in the newspaper business, including his time at the Chicago Inter-Ocean and the Daily News. Casey is quite a storyteller, with amusing stories about many of the characters in the news business and out. Much coverage on the murder of Jake Lingel a leg man for McCormick's paper. Lingel was initially lionized as reporter who was gunned down by the lawless element he was allegedly trying to expose. McCormick and the city gave Lingel a huge funeral, including a parade. However, it was learned shortly after that Lingel was in business with Capone and many others. This lowly newsman had a summer mansion in Michigan, a diamond belt buckle from Capone, and bank accounts with 1000s of dollars. Enjoyable for anyone with an interest in the old newspaper business or the more colorful aspects of Chicago-land from the early 20th century
