Seasons and months

Shows how the various strands of the classical tradition, the goliardic songs, the medieval encyclopedists, French courtly poetry and the work of manuscript illuminators all contributed to the imagery of English poets. The wide range of reference makes this a striking contribution not only to the understanding of the mechanism of the poems, but also to our knowledge of the medieval intellectual world as a whole and the way in which learning and literature were interwoven.
