Night Sister Williams was horrified when she found that a patient had left her a fortune; the more so because that patient's only son, Doctor Ivor Berwyn, would, she knew, have used the money to help found a valuable clinic. The legal complexities were such that the only way she could give the money back to Ivor was by marrying him; and this she agreed to do, on the understanding that before very long they would part, and that neither should expect love from the other. But they had not been long married long before they found out that this seemingly sensible notion had one drawback: it could not be carried out in practice.
