Ruth had been an impressionable teenager when she met Domenico Rosselli and fell briefly in love with him. But he had gone away and she had never seen him again. Now, eight years later, Ruth had grown up, and had heard that Domenico was dead. But when his brother David asked her to bring Domenico's young daughter Benedicta over to live with him in Italy, she could hardly refuse.
