From the Preface... This book is an expansion of six lectures prepared and delivered under the auspices of the Committee on the History of Religions of the American Council of Learned Societies. They were presented, either as a whole or in part, during the academic year 1964-65, at Northwestern University, Princeton University, Harvard Divinity School and Center for the Study of World Religions, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, Union Theological Seminary, Rice University, the Perkins Theological Seminary of Southern Methodist University, San Diego State College, Claremont Graduate School, the Southern California School of Theology, and Duke University.
