"I. In this second volume of my history of philosophy I had originally hoped to give as account of the development of philosophy throughout the whole period of the Middle Ages, understanding by mediaeval philosophy the philosophic thought and systems which were elaborated between the Carolingian renaissance in the last part of the eight century A.D.
