Shane Moody has been gone for over a year, leaving his wife to fend off a rapacious preacher named Jessup, who's determined to add her to his haven of wives. She's been keeping up a front that her feared husband is still at home. But sooner or later, Jessup is bound to lean the truth and take Callie by force. Then her young boy brings home a wounded gunman named CC Ellis. Since no one in town has ever met Shane face-to-face, CC protects Callie by posing as her husband. The arrangement is in name only-at least at first. But as Jessup's gang closes in, Callie suspects that CC knows a great deal about her missing husband-and whether she'll ever see him alive again.
