About Author

Peter Høeg

Peter Høeg (born 17 May 1957) is a Danish writer of fiction. He is best known for his novel Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow (1992).

First sentence

It's freezing-an extraordinary 0 Fahrenheit-and it's snowing, and in the language that is no longer mine, the snow is qanik-big, almost weightless crystals falling in clumps and covering the ground with a layer of pulverized white frost...

Description

Miss Smilla Jasperson isn't prepared to accept the Copenhagen police's verdict of accidental death when a neighbour's six-year-old boy falls from the roof of a block of flats. She's a Greenlander, and her feeling for snow tells her that the footprints in the snow are a clue to what happened.
