First published in 1829, this work is a pioneer compendium of vital data on the characteristics and salubrity of a considerable number of British, European and other cities and countries. The book went beyond the bills of mortality, parish registers and census enumerations which constituted the traditional sources of vital data. It is recognized as one of the early landmarks in a field of continuing importance to public health and medicine.
