Description

Johann Georg Bühler (July 19, 1837 – April 8, 1898) a renowned Indologist, was born in Borstel, Hanover, Germany. He studied classical philology, Sanskrit, Zend, Persian, Armenian, and Arabic. In 1858 he received his doctorate in eastern languages and archaeology. On the basis of his original research in the field of Sanskrit manuscripts he was invited by Prof. Max Müller to join the Benares Sanskrit College in India. Bühler arrived on February 10, 1863 in Bombay where he became a Fellow of Bombay University and member of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. During his stay in India he collected a remarkable number of texts for the Indian government and the libraries of Berlin, Cambridge University, and Oxford University. Buhler was a prodigious scholar and has authored scores of books. Bühler's book A Detailed Report of a Tour in Search of Sanskrit MSS reveals his range and depth of research. The book is indispensable for students and scholars in fields of study like history, culture, languages and oriental learning.
