Chief Joseph of the Nez Percés

Fighting the government's efforts to force the Nez Percé Indians onto a reservation, Chief Joseph led his people on a one-thousand-mile retreat from the military troops whom he could outwit but not overpower. Only forty miles from his goal--Canada--he was forced to surrender.
