Field investigations of mammals and birds in Mexico were initiated by the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy (later the Bureau of Biological Survey) of the United States Department of Agricultures, as a part of general surveys designed to afford information bearing on numbers, distribution, and habits of species in North America as a whole.
