This book details the development of forestry, and especially silviculture, from the ancient period through the turn of the 20th century. The most detailed information provided concerns the various systems of forest organization current in Europe at the time of publication; a good deal of the book also concerns the recent (at the time) introduction of formal silvicultural systems and forest management practices to North America.
