I started writing for young people thanks to baseball (that’s a long story). My first book, published in 2005, was a biography of Aung San Suu Kyi, the now-imprisoned democracy activist from Myanmar. More non-fiction books followed until, in 2012, I switched to writing middle-grade fiction. When I’m not writing, I like to spend time with family and friends, read, watch baseball, play my guitar and sing, go hiking and camping, and daydream. Although daydreaming is, I believe, an important part of the writing process. I grew up and still live in Rochester, New York, not far from the shore of Lake Ontario. My wife and I have three adult children and three grandchildren. -

"Kansas: The History of the Sunflower State is the first new state history to appear in over twenty-five years and the most thoroughly researched ever published. Written to enlighten general readers within and well beyond the state's borders, it offers coverage not found in previous histories: greater attention to its cities - notably Wichita - and to its south central and western regions, accounts of business history, contributions of women and minorities, and environmental concerns. It presents the dark as well as the bright side of Kansas progressivism and is the first Kansas history to deal with the post-World War II era in any significant detail."--BOOK JACKET.
