Prentice Hall Literature--Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes--The American Experience

Modern Biblical criticism (as opposed to pre-Modern criticism) is the use of critical analysis to understand and explain the Bible without appealing to the supernatural. During the eighteenth century, when it began as historical-biblical criticism, it was based on two distinguishing characteristics: (1) the scientific concern to avoid dogma and bias by applying a neutral, non-sectarian, reason-based judgment to the study of the Bible, and (2) the belief that the reconstruction of the historical events behind the texts, as well as the history of how the texts themselves developed, would lead to a correct understanding of the Bible. This sets it apart from earlier, pre-critical methods; from the anti-critical methods of those who oppose criticism-based study; from the post-critical orientation of later scholarship; and from the multiple distinct schools of criticism into which it evolved in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The emergence of biblical criticism is most often attributed by scholars to the German Enlightenment (c. 1650 – c. 1800), but some trace its roots back further, to the Reformation. Its principal scholarly influences were rationalist and Protestant in orientation; German pietism played a role in its development, as did British deism.

Navaho legends

0.0 (0)

Navaho Legends is one of the earliest collections of Navajo oral traditions in English, and still the best. Originally published in 1897, this sensitive translation by Washington Matthews (1843-1905) contains an extensive version of the Origin Legend plus two other tales. These richly detailed legends remain among the most complete sources of Navajo cultural, ritual, and ceremonial information. This edition is fully faithful to the original, containing Matthews's introduction, extensive notes, interlinear prayer translations, and musical notations, plus a note on modern orthography by Robert W. Young. Washington Matthews, army major and surgeon, was based in the Southwest. He was one of the earliest recorders of Navajo culture.

Ethnography and philology of the Hidatsa Indians

1877

0.0 (0)

This work is based on Dr. Washington Matthews studies of the Hidatsa Indians while stated at a military post and serving as a medical officer of the Army. This work presents what Matthews learned by observing manners, customs, and other characteristics, as well as making a close and careful study of their language. The original intent was to publish this treatise as a portion of a general work on Indian ethnography, but a delay in publishing the larger work made it desirable to prepare this material as a separate publication.
