The great reversals
One of the earliest reversals demonstrated that the laws we inherited from settled England were not necessarily fitting or just when applied to a wilderness society. Another early reversal extended the rights of citizenship to corporations because, as companies grew and ownership multiplied, lawsuits that involved every stockholder would have become hopelessly complicated. Later the Court reversed itself on such landmark issues as paper money, income taxes, censorship, segregation, and women's rights. Shows the influence of men like Jefferson, Hamilton, Marshall, Roger B. Taney, Salmon P. Chase, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Evans Hughes and Earl Warren on the Supreme Court.
The first freedom
A history of free speech in our country from earliest times to some of the controversial court cases of today involving school demonstrations and the right of Nazis to march.
Too big
Little Ola daydreams of a time when--no longer too small or too big--he will be just the right size to go on adventures.
Censorship: the search for the obscene
This text details the history of what, in law, has been considered obscene, pornographic, prurient, indecent, and 'dirty'. From notorious novels to naturalist movies, from sex education for juveniles to sex magazines for adults, all phases of the controversial field are covered. The role of censorship, official and private, is documented in terms of actual cases, briefs, and judicial decisions.
To the pure ..
This book is dedicated to the perplexed booksellers who, under the unknown rules of literary decent, cannot insure themselves against imprisonment, even by reading all the volumes on their shelves.
