"Piero Manzoni was the enfant terrible of the post-war Italian avant-garde before his untimely death in Milan in 1963 at the age of just twenty-nine. Curated by Germano Celant, the artist's premier scholar and author of the two editions of the Manzoni catalogues raisonne's (Milan, 1975 and Milan, 2004), this stunning catalogue spans Manzoni's entire oeuvre, including works belonging to the Manzoni archives as well as several international museums and private collections. In addition, it presents several works by Manzoni's American and European contemporaries. Manzoni's alignments and responses to other artists active at the time, from Robert Rauschenberg to Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana to Robert Ryman, and Cy Twombly to Jasper Johns, demonstrate his own decisive contribution to the art of the late fifties and early sixties. The book is published on the occasion of the first complete retrospective in the U.S. on this artist, installed at the Gagosian Gallery, New York, from January 24 to March 7, 2009. Solo, ciclo espositivo presso il Museo Novecento di Firenze, da cui emergono brevi ritratti di grandi maestri del secolo scorso. Dopo Emilio Vedova, il successivo appuntamento è dedicato a Piero Manzoni (1933-1963), la cui apparizione nel cielo dell'arte è stata tanto breve quanto luminosa, di un'intensità che continua a crescere dopo l' improvvisa morte a Milano, nel suo studio di via Fiori Chiari. II curatore di mostra e catalogo, Gaspare Luigi Marcone, si è concentrato sugli "oggetti" - o meglio i "concetti-oggetti" - che l'artista produce dal 1959 al 1962. Con particolare riguardo per le "Linee", che Lucio Fontana, intervistato alla radio l'8 febbraio 1963, ebbe a definire un'innovazione artistica di portata internazionale. Non mancano gli "Achromes" (realizzati fin dal 1957, ma così intitolati solo nella primavera del 1959, in occasione della mostra al bar La Parete di Milano), su cui si è concentrato in questi decenni l'interesse dei collezionisti.

Published on the occasion of the Piero Manzoni exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, this volume documents the artist's entire career and contains many images previously unpublished. Commissioned by the artist's heirs, Germano Celant documents all of Manzoni's creative digressions, cataloguing, by means of direct inspection and scientific analysis, all the works in existence, which total 1229 published works, over 400 of which reproduced in colour.
