Personal Information
Description
> M. P. Shiel is a pen name of Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947). He was a West Indian-born British writer who produced twenty-five novels and dozens of short stories under the name M. P. Shiel, mostly in the romantic or supernatural adventure vein. His best-remembered novel is The Purple Cloud (1901), a "last-man-on-Earth" tale that inspired Stephen King's The Stand (1978) as well as several films. He is also known for four stories with the highly unusual detective Prince Zaleski (1895). Chris Steinbrunner and Otto Penzler, in their essential Encyclopedia of Mystery & Detection (1976), call Zaleski "probably the most bizarre, erudite, and ethereal detective in literature." Shiel himself, referring to "the notorious Holmes [as] a bastard son" of Dupin, termed Zaleski "a legitimate son." >> Leslie S. Klinger, In The Shadow of Sherlock Holmes (2011)

The lord of the sea
In the Calle Las Gabias - one of those by-streets of Lisbon below St. Catherine - there occurred one New Year a little event in the Synagogue there worth a mention in this history of Richard, Lord of the Sea.
Prince Zaleski
Prince Zaleski, an exiled Russian nobleman, inhabits a half-ruined abbey in Wales, where he spends most of his time smoking cannabis and opium, reading from his library of medieval books, or admiring his collection of rare curios dating from ancient antiquity. His retirement from the world is occasionally interrupted by his friend Shiel, who comes to seek Zaleski's help in solving mysteries that have baffled the greatest minds in Britain: In "The Race of Orven," Zaleski must unravel a case involving a burglary, a murder, a floating phantasm, and three severed fingers. In "The Stone of the Edmundsbury Monks," the prince races against time to solve the mystery of a jewel from the Crusades that may cause a man's death. And in the final story in the collection, "The S.S.," an inexplicable wave of thousands of apparent suicides puts Zaleski to the ultimate test and leads to a deeply disturbing conclusion. [Source
The Purple Cloud
Published in 1901, M. P. Shiel's The Purple Cloud is an early "last man" science fiction novel. Foretold by a priest as being against the will of God, Adam Jeffson's Arctic expedition unleashes a terrible fate on the world - a mysterious purple cloud that spreads far into the heavens and across the earth. Jeffson returns to the horror of finding the entire crew dead onboard his ship, and, as he gradually realizes, the entire population of the planet has been wiped out. Descending into a madness, he burns cities, declares himself a monarch with no subjects, attempts to create an enormous golden palace for God and for himself. But everything changes as he discovers he is not the only person left, stumbling upon a naked young woman without any knowledge of the world that once stood.
