Description
Jan Hendrik van den Berg werd op 11 juni 1914 in Deventer geboren. In mei 1942 trad hij in het huwelijk met Louise Johanna van Everdingen. Het echtpaar kreeg vier kinderen. In 1946 promoveerde hij bij zijn leermeester prof. Rümke op ”De beteekenis van de phaenomenologische of existentiele anthropologie in de psychiatrie”. Van den Berg studeerde in Frankrijk en Zwitserland, waar hij zich verdiepte in de fenomenologie van Heidegger, Sartre en Merleau-Ponty. In 1947 werd hij chef de clinique aan de psychiatrische universiteitskliniek te Utrecht. In 1948 volgde de benoeming tot lector psychopathologie in Utrecht, later in Amsterdam. In 1954 werd Van den Berg hoogleraar in de fenomenologische methode en conflictpsychologie te Leiden. In 1979 ging hij met emeritaat. Zijn vrouw overleed in 1980. In december 1987 huwde Van den Berg opnieuw met Alieda de Gier.
