"Throughout humanity's Fourteen Worlds, no group is as feared and respected as the Dorsai. The ultimate warriors, they are known for their deadly rages, ferocious independence...and unbending honor. No one man rules the Dorsai, but their mastery of the arts of war has made them the most valuable mercenaries in the human universe.". "Dorsai! is the saga of Donal Graeme, a uniquely talented Dorsai with powers beyond those of ordinary men. Once he ventures to the stars, the world of the Dorsai will be changed forever.". "The Spirit of Dorsai, written two decades later, is Dickson's great novel of the women of the Dorsai. The warrior spirit of the Dorsai does not, cannot reside solely in the men of that race - for when the mercenary Dorsai go to their wars, it is their women who defend their home planet from the predators of the universe. And defend it they do: their home planet has never fallen to an invader, though space is full of the corpses of those who have tried."--BOOK JACKET.

In this latest of Gordon R. Dickson's adventures of Jim Eckert - the twentieth-century scholar who has come to live in a medieval age where magic works and Jim himself can become a dragon at will - Gordon R. Dickson draws on the richness of the greatest medieval legend of all, the tale of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. In the legends, after their final battle, Arthur and his knights went to Lyonesse, the land under the sea. Now Lyonesse is threatened by a resurgence of the Dark Powers, those mindlessly malevolent forces that struggle to stop the course of History. And Jim Eckert and his friends are called upon to stop them. Although centuries have elapsed, Arthur and his court live on in Lyonesse because there are still those who believe in them. And Arthur and his knights are proud; too proud to easily accept help from Jim Eckert and his allies. But they will have help - from Jim in his dragon form, from knight-in-armor Sir Brian Neville-Smyth, from the brilliant archer Dafydd ap Hywel, and from one small hobgoblin.

Eckert's daring exploits have earned him a title - Baron de Bois de Malencontri et Riveroak - and he has settled down to a peaceful life as a feudal lord, with his beloved Angela at his side. But a new peril endangers his enchanted realm as the King of the Gnarlies teams up with the Earl of Cumberland, Jim's longtime rival, to kidnap his adopted son, Robert. Soon Sir Jim must assume the shape of the Dragon Knight once again to rescue little Robert, and he then finds himself entrenched in a magical battle royal - one he'll have to fight harder than ever to survive!

First there was "The Dragon and the George," Gordon R. Dickson's now-clissic tale of a twentieth-century American magically transported to an alternate medieval world-and transformed into a dragon to boot! Then "The Dragon Knight" continued the adventures of Jim Eckert-now Baron de Malencontriet Riveroak-in a fantastical England inhabited by talking wolves and evil sorcerers. Now, in "The Dragon on the Border." Sir James-the Dragon Knight-faces what may be the greatest challenge of his existence: The Hollow Men. Vengeful spirits of the dead, the Hollow Men, appear as empty suits of armor astride invisible mounts. But their weapons are real enough-as are their undying lusts for wine, gold and plunder. Worse yet, a slain Hollow Man can always be restored within two days-and as long as one of their unholy number endures, no Hollow Man can ever truly die... "The Dragon on the Border" marks Gordon R. Dickson's triumphant return with on of the most unusual heroes of modern phantasy.

One of the many end of the world as we know it books with the focus on survival and getting back to nature. Man relearning how to use what the earth provides. Very good book even though it is rather black and white. You're either good or bad. Very simplistic.
