North by Northwest is a 1959 American spy thriller film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, and James Mason. The original screenplay written by Ernest Lehman was intended to be the basis for "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures". North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity: an innocent man (Grant) is pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization that aims to prevent him from blocking their plan to smuggle microfilm containing government secrets out of the country. It is one of several Hitchcock films featuring a musical score by Bernard Herrmann and an opening title sequence by graphic designer Saul Bass. The film was the first to feature extended use of kinetic typography in its opening credits.

"Alexander Portnoy has a problem. He thinks he's living his life in the middle of a Jewish joke. Lying on a psychoanalyst's couch, Portnoy unravels his endless complaint with the one-track selfishness of an aging adolescent. He whines, he howls, he dredges his character and comes up empty-handed. For years, Alexander Portnoy has been led about by his libido...and has been unable to satisfy it. Now he can. He's met the Monkey, an uninhibited, air-headed model who -- heart, soul, and everything else -- is devotedly Portnoy's. So why isn't he happy? "So what's to be happy about?" That response underscores this outlandish spoof of sexuality and ingrained guilt."--Container

Cary Grant is the screen's supreme man-on-the-run in his fourth and final teaming with master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock. He plays a Manhattan adman plunged into a realm of spy (James Mason) and counterspy (Eva Marie Saint) and variously abducted, framed for murder, chased and, in a signature set-piece, crop-dusted. He also hangs for dear life from the facial features of Mount Rushmore's Presidents. Savor one of Hollywood's most enjoyable thrillers ever in this state-of-the-art restoration. Its renewed picture vitality will leave you just as breathless as the chase itself. - Container.
