This book had previously been incorrectly described as being Héros à vendre (a Hero for Leanda). Traduction française de Nicolète et Pierre Darcis (1954). This is not the French edition but an American paperback edition published by Lancer Books in 1965 as depicted in the accompanying cover illustration. The publication date was also wrong. The book was originally published in 1959 not 1954.

Gentle, idealistic Edward Latimer lives a peaceful life in the tiny village of Stapleford. He is a widower, with two grown sons working in London and a rather dull, dutiful daughter keeping house for him. He was once a schoolmaster and a journalist, and is now happily retired. As Latimer's son Hugh describes him, "He's a great reformer, you know, in his quiet way, and the kindest man alive--if everyone were like him the world wouldn't be a bad place to live in." Then a young woman comes forward to accuse him of assault - with witnesses, no less - and is later found strangled in a lonely spot on the marsh where she allegedly was going to meet with none other than... Edward Latimer. Now, Latimer's family must work together to solve the mystery before it is too late.

No Tears for Hilda

When Max Easterbrook arrived in London on a month's leave, he was astounded to find George Lambert, his best friend, in prison on a charge of wife-murder. The police were satisfied that here was a clear case of the eternal triangle; no need to look far for the murderer, for George was not exactly weeping tears at his wife's sad demise. But Max was sure George was not the man to murder one woman in order to marry another. He was not nearly so sure that the large and lazy Hilda was not a natural murderee.
