One of the great light-hearted French classics. The book tells the story of Tartarin, a Falstaff-like figure, full of hot-air and bluster, who is persuaded by the fellow residents of the provincial French town in which he lives to go on a lion-hunting expedition to Algeria. He blunders along from one disaster to the next, involving a foreign con-man, a lady of easy virtue, and a blind lion, but in the end he comes out of it all smelling of roses. It is best read in the original French.

On lit dans le Dictionnaire des Celebrites, contemporaines, edition de 1880, a l'article Astier-Rehu: « Astier, dit Astier-Rehu (Pierre-Alexandre-Leonard), de l'Academie francaise, ne en 1816, a Sauvagnat (Puy-de-Dome) chez d'humbles cultivateurs, montra des son plus jeune age de rares aptitudes pour l'histoire. De solides etudes, comme on n'en fait plus maintenant, commencees au college de Riom, terminees a Louis-le-Grand ou il devait revenir plus tard professeur, lui ouvrirent toutes grandes les portes de l'Ecole Normale superieure. Il en sortit pour occuper la chaire d'histoire au lycee de Mende; c'est la que fut ecrit l'Essai sur Marc-Aurele, (couronne par l'Academie francaise). Appele l'annee suivante a Paris par M. de Salvandy, le jeune et brillant professeur sut reconnaitre l'intelligente faveur dont il avait ete l'objet en publiant coup sur coup: Les grands ministres de Louis XIV (couronne par l'Academie francaise), - Bonaparte et le Concordat (couronne par l'Academie francaise), - et cette admirable Introduction a l'Histoire de la Maison d'Orleans, _portique grandiose de l'oeuvre a laquelle l'historien devait donner vingt ans de sa vie. Cette fois, l'Academie n'ayant plus de couronne a lui offrir, le fit asseoir parmi ses elus. Il etait deja un peu de la maison, ayant epouse Mlle Rehu, fille du regrette Paulin Rehu, le celebre architecte, membre de l'Academie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, petite-fille du venerable Jean Rehu, doyen de l'Academie francaise, l'elegant traducteur d'Ovide, l'auteur des Lettres a Uranie, dont la verte vieillesse fait l'admiration de l'Institut.
